The Uncompahgre Wilderness is a stunning and diverse wilderness area located in southwestern Colorado. Spanning over 102,000 acres, this wilderness area is characterized by rugged mountains, deep canyons, alpine meadows, and crystal clear lakes. One of the most prominent features of the Uncompahgre Wilderness is the towering peaks of the San Juan Mountains, including several peaks that rise over 14,000 feet in elevation. These mountains provide a dramatic backdrop for the wilderness area and offer challenging opportunities for hiking, backpacking, and mountaineering. The Uncompahgre Wilderness is also home to a variety of wildlife, including elk, deer, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, and black bears.
