Sleeping Bear Dunes Wilderness

The Sleeping Bear Dunes Wilderness is located within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Michigan. It covers an area of approximately 32,000 acres and is known for its towering sand dunes that rise up to 450 feet above Lake Michigan. The dunes were formed by glaciers during the Ice Age and have been shaped by wind and waves over thousands of years. This wilderness area is home to a diverse range of plant and animal species, including rare orchids, pitcher plants, and the endangered Piping Plover. The dunes provide important habitat for these species and serve as a unique ecosystem within the Great Lakes region. Visitors to the Sleeping Bear Dunes Wilderness can enjoy hiking, birdwatching, and camping in this pristine natural environment. The views from the top of the dunes are breathtaking, offering sweeping vistas of Lake Michigan and the surrounding forests. Preservation efforts are ongoing to protect the fragile ecosystem of the Sleeping Bear Dunes Wilderness. Visitors are encouraged to follow Leave No Trace principles and respect the natural beauty of this unique landscape.

Sleeping Bear Dunes

The main attraction of Sleeping Bear Dunes Wilderness is the massive sand dunes that tower up to 450 feet above Lake Michigan. Visitors can embark on a strenuous hike to the top of the dunes for breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding forests.

Empire Bluff Trail

This popular hiking trail offers a more manageable trek to a stunning overlook of Lake Michigan and the Sleeping Bear Dunes. The trail is relatively short but provides a rewarding panoramic view at the end.

Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive

For those who prefer a more leisurely way to take in the beauty of Sleeping Bear Dunes, the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is a must-visit. This 7.4-mile drive takes visitors through forests, dunes, and overlooks with stunning views of the lake.

Glen Lake

Glen Lake is a crystal-clear body of water located near Sleeping Bear Dunes. Visitors can enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding, or swimming in the pristine waters surrounded by lush greenery and sand dunes.

Sleeping Bear Point Trail

This trail leads visitors through diverse ecosystems, including forests, dunes, and beaches. Along the way, hikers may spot wildlife such as deer, birds, and even the occasional black bear.
