Details

Becharof Wilderness

The Becharof Wilderness is located in southwestern Alaska and covers approximately 1.2 million acres. It is part of the larger Becharof National Wildlife Refuge, which was established in 1980 to protect the diverse ecosystems and wildlife found in the region. One of the most striking features of the Becharof Wilderness is the presence of the Aleutian Range, a volcanic mountain range that runs through the area. This rugged terrain is characterized by steep cliffs, deep valleys, and alpine tundra, providing habitat for a variety of plant and animal species. The wilderness is also home to numerous lakes and rivers, including Becharof Lake, which is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Alaska. These waterways support a thriving population of fish, including salmon, trout, and char, which in turn attract a variety of predators such as bears and eagles. The Becharof Wilderness is an important habitat for a number of species, including brown bears, caribou, wolves, and a variety of bird species. The area also provides critical nesting grounds for migratory birds, making it an important stopover point for many species during their annual migrations. In addition to its ecological significance, the Becharof Wilderness is also an important area for outdoor recreation, offering opportunities for hiking, fishing, hunting, and wildlife viewing. The rugged terrain and remote location make it a challenging but rewarding destination for those seeking a true wilderness experience in Alaska.
