Planting Day for My Fall/Winter Garden

10/7/2024
I forgot how much I enjoy putting in my Fall and Winter Garden. It was such a refreshing Sunday Afternoon, taking all my seedlings and a few seeds and getting them in the ground. I have a great plan this year that I am excited to share.

September 26, 2024 - Seed Planting Day

I was spending so much time on other things lately that I let my garden lag a bit. I was waiting a bit for temperatures to stay well beneath 100 degrees, but I still could have had the seedlings going safely in my garage nursery. Anyhow, better late that never right? It is still fairly early so we will be okay.

I planted

VEGETABLES
- Arugula
- Basil
- Bok Choi
- Broccoli (at least 15 plants)
- Cilantro
- Kale
- Lettuce (Bibb and Black Seeded Simpson)
- Super Sugar Snap Peas (10 plants)

FLOWERS
- Pansies
- Petunias
- Violas (Johnny Jump Up)

AND YES, MY CHEATER GROUP....
- Cucumber (squeezing one more short harvest in)
- Yellow Squash (squeezing one more short harvest in)
- Zucchini (squeezing one more short harvest in)

Use the Entire Right Compost Bin

I top off the surface of my raised garden bed with rich, finished compost from the right bin. This compost helps to retain moisture, improves soil structure, and provides essential nutrients for healthy plant growth. By regularly adding compost to the beds, I ensure my garden thrives throughout the growing season. It's important to use the fully decomposed material from the right bin to avoid introducing any unfinished compost, which can rob the soil of nitrogen while it continues to break down.

My Garden Helper

Macie loves to search out any critters she can find roaming around the old tomato vines ready to head into the compost pile once I empty the finished compost.

October 2, 2024 - Many of the Seeds Have Germinated

I had these on a heat mat and germination went very well this year. They will be ready to get in the ground or put in larger cells soon!

October 6, 2024 - I Love Super Sugar Snap Peas

My wife was going to her moms early in the morning, so I started around 8:00am and put my favorite winter crop in, Super Sugar Snap Peas.

New Climbing Strings are Up!

Mint Has Been Driving Me Crazy

I ended up digging this out and will continue to try to win my battle with the infamous Mint plant. Broccoli will be going into this large section. I decided not to grow cauliflower as I let some of my cauliflower heads get too mature, and it was an absolute slug fest. Not very fun.....

Arugula, Cilantro, and Kale

Thats what my daughter orders, so this year we will have: Arugula, Cilantro, and Kale!

Broccoli - Around 15 Plants

I will have lots of broccoli this year in the middle of this large bed.
