Chargers Pre-Season Preview 2024

7/10/2024
Most of the NFL roster moves have been made, so the 2024 Chargers Roster is starting to take shape. This post goes over the changes - who the Chargers Drafted, Lost, and Gained, and who will be the X-Factor for the Chargers this season.

2024 Chargers Draft Picks

Round 1, Pick 5: Joe Alt, OT, Notre Dame
Round 2, Pick 34: Ladd McConkey, WR, Georgia
Round 3, Pick 69: Junior Colson, LB, Michigan
Round 4, Pick 105: Justin Eboigbe, DL, Alabama
Round 5, Pick 140: Tarheeb Still, CB, Maryland
Round 5, Pick 140: Cam Hart, CB, Notre Dame
Round 6, Pick 181: Kimani Vidal, RB, Troy
Round 7, Pick 225: Brenden Rice, WR, USC
Round 7, Pick 253: Cornelius Johnson, WR, Michigan

Experts praised several aspects of the Chargers' draft:
Addressing key needs: The Chargers focused on strengthening their offensive line, receiving corps, and defense.
First-round pick Joe Alt: While some debate exists about his transition to right tackle, Alt is considered a top tackle prospect with potential Pro Bowl upside.
Value picks: Ladd McConkey (2nd round) and Junior Colson (3rd round) were highlighted as particularly good value selections.
Strategic trades: The trade-up for McConkey was viewed positively, showcasing the team's commitment to addressing needs efficiently.
Late-round potential: Several Day 3 picks, including Cam Hart (5th round) and Brenden Rice (7th round), were noted for their potential to contribute early or develop into valuable players.

Charger Players Lost 2024

the Los Angeles Chargers lost three significant players in the 2024 offseason:
Keenan Allen: The veteran wide receiver was traded to the Chicago Bears. The Chargers received a 2024 fourth-round pick (No. 110) in exchange for Allen.

Mike Williams: Another key wide receiver, Williams signed with the New York Jets as a free agent.

Austin Ekeler: The veteran running back confirmed after the 2023 season that he would not be returning to the Chargers. His performance declined significantly in 2023, making it difficult for the team to justify offering him a new contract.

Kenneth Murray: The linebacker's rookie contract has expired, and given his underwhelming performance since being drafted in the first round in 2020, it's likely he won't be re-signed

Michael Davis had the highest 2023 cap hit of any Charger hitting free agency this offseason, and nothing about his play this year suggested he deserved that much — or any new contract in L.A. at all.

These departures significantly impacted the Chargers' receiving corps, which likely influenced their draft strategy. The loss of both Allen and Williams created a pressing need for the team to acquire new talent at the wide receiver position to support quarterback Justin Herbert. It's worth noting that these losses in the receiving corps were part of the reason why the Chargers prioritized drafting wide receiver Ladd McConkey in the second round (No. 34 overall) of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Chargers Coaches

Head Coach - Jim Harbaugh

A former quarterback for the Chargers during the 1999 and 2000 seasons, Harbaugh spent the past nine years at his alma mater as head football coach for the University of Michigan. Harbaugh rejoins the Chargers after having led Michigan to three consecutive Big Ten Championships, three straight appearances in the College Football Playoff and a perfect 15-0 record this past season that saw the Wolverines crowned 2023 National Champions.

Defensive Coordinator - Jesse Minter

Minter's unit was the top-ranked defense in the country in 2023, allowing just 247.0 total net yards per game en route to a College Football Playoff National Championship, and ranked No. 2 in the nation over his two-season span as defensive coordinator (268.8). A rising star, Minter was a finalist for the Broyles Award in 2022, an honor annually presented to the top assistant coach in college football.

Prior to his time in Ann Arbor, Mich., Minter was the defensive coordinator and safeties coach for Vanderbilt University during the 2021 season. He coached his first four seasons (2017-20) in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens, advancing to the role of defensive backs coach his final year with the Ravens. In his four years in Baltimore, the Ravens secured three postseason berths and back-to-back AFC North Division crowns (2018-19).

Minter was the defensive coordinator at Georgia State from 2013-16, earning his first Broyles nomination in 2015 with the Panthers. Minter began his coaching career as a defensive intern for the University of Notre Dame in 2006, moving on to be a graduate assistant for the University of Cincinnati for two seasons (2007-08) and coaching a total of four seasons at Indiana State — two as linebackers coach (2009-10) and another two as defensive coordinator (2011-12), marking his first coordinator experience.

Offensive Coordinator - Greg Roman

Over the course of his NFL career, Roman has coached 13 players to be selected to 28 Pro Bowls, including Mark Andrews (2021), Lamar Jackson (2019), Ronnie Stanley (2019) and Mike Iupati (2012) as AP first-team All-Pros. Roman is reunited with Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh, who he worked under for six seasons — as associate head coach at Stanford (2009-10) and as offensive coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers (2011-14).

With the 49ers, He oversaw an offense that ranked No. 2 in the NFL in rushing offense, averaging 139.3 yards per game Roman was the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills from 2015-16 before returning to Baltimore in 2017, coaching the Ravens tight ends for two seasons (2017-18). Roman broke into the NFL with the Carolina Panthers in a variety of roles from 1995-2001 before joining the Houston Texans to coach tight ends (2002-03) and quarterbacks (2004-05). He then had his first stint with the Baltimore Ravens, serving as the team's assistant offensive line coach from 2006-07.
