Early Start
We left Southern California around 3:30 am after some of use getting just a few hours of sleep. We had about a four and a half hour drive ahead of us, and after a slight traffic issue on the 15, we made it to the McDonalds in Bishop around 8:30 am. It was about a 20 mile drive to the parking at the Lake Sabrina Trailhead. The six of us set off at 10:00 am. We had a newbie along, so we were going to find out she fared on the trail and at the high elevation.
John Muir Wilderness - Inyo National Park
After about 30 minutes in you hit the John Muir Wilderness sign.
Easy River Crossings
There is a fairly easy river crossing about 50 minutes into the hike. For most people, this won't be much of an issue as there are stable rocks that people are able to step on to avoid getting wet.
Blue Lake!
At 12:30 pm the first group arrived at Blue Lake. We discovered right away that the mosquitoes were a little thicker than we had hoped. The rest of our party was a bit tired from the high elevation and strenuous climb for the 3 miles to Blue Lake with 35 poinds on your back.
This picture shows how beautiful this place is!
Fishing On At Blue Lake
We had time that first day to put the KastMaster in Blue Lake and here Simon shows his first Trout of the trip.
Emerald Lakes
After heading to Baboon Lakes via the Donkey Lake trail, we decided it would have to much bouldering to suit our entire party, so we turned back and went to Emerald Lakes.
This is one of the smaller Emerald Lakes and we get smiles on our faces being able to experience this beauty and a bit of relief from the mosquitoes.
Wide Open Fishing at Emerald Lakes
The fishing was great at Emerald Lakes. Luke was able to catch 16 fish out of his first 23 casts. He ended up catching close to 50 fish this trip.
No Pants Required to Catch Fish
Simon went for a refreshing dip in the chilly lake, then decided to add to his fish count by reeling in another beautiful trout. This was a very special time enjoying the majesty of Emerald Lakes.
First Fish Ever!
Rajean was able to catch her first fish every, and was getting the hang of it when (without ANY help) was able to bring in this lovely trout.
Eating Took Some Bravery
The mosquitoes were thick, so one had to suck it up to be out in the open and cook the dinner for the group.
Ready To Return to Normal Life
Here we are ready to head back down the mountain. The late sleepers got up around 6:30 am, and we were packed up and ready to head down the mountain at 7:38 am.
It Feels Good Being Back Down the Mountain
We were all back at the cars at 9:36 am. Andrew pushed hard and was back at the trailhead in only an hour. A few of us took a little longer.
