Extend Your Avocado Harvest By Refrigerating Your Avocados

6/20/2024
One way to resolve my rat or squirrel issue was to simply pick my avocados and put them in my refridgerator. Most of these were picked on May 21, 2024. As you can see we have thirteen reed avocados in my drawer here, and we have three more that our in our fruit-bowl in the ripening process. I generally pull an avocado out every day or two to keep the pipeline of ripe avocados going.

Stagger Ripening

Staggering the ripening of avocados is a great technique to ensure a steady supply of perfectly ripe fruit over an extended period. Start by keeping your unripe avocados at room temperature, allowing them to ripen naturally. Once they reach the desired ripeness, transfer them to the refrigerator. The cool temperature will slow down the ripening process, keeping the avocados fresh for an additional 3-5 days. By staggering when you refrigerate them, you can enjoy ripe avocados without worrying about them spoiling all at once. This method is particularly useful if you have a large batch of avocados and want to make the most of their shelf life.

Stagger Picking When Harvesting

Stagger picking is an effective strategy for managing your avocado harvest to ensure a continuous supply of fresh fruit. Instead of picking all your avocados at once, harvest them gradually over several weeks. Start by selecting the largest and most mature avocados first, leaving the smaller, less ripe ones on the tree to develop further. This approach allows you to enjoy fresh avocados over a more extended period without them all ripening simultaneously. Stagger picking helps reduce waste and ensures that you always have perfectly ripe avocados ready for use, whether for cooking, salads, or snacks.

Refrigerate Ripe Fruit

Refrigerating ripe fruit is an excellent way to extend its freshness and enjoy it over a longer period. Once your fruit has reached optimal ripeness, placing it in the refrigerator can slow down the ripening process and prevent spoilage. This method is especially useful for fruits like avocados, berries, and stone fruits, which can quickly become overripe if left at room temperature. By refrigerating ripe fruit, you can maintain its flavor, texture, and nutritional value, ensuring that you always have delicious, ready-to-eat fruit on hand for snacks, meals, or recipes.

Freezing Avocados

Freezing avocados or guacamole is a smart way to preserve them for future use while maintaining their flavor and nutritional benefits. To freeze avocados, start by cutting them in half, removing the pit, and scooping out the flesh. You can either mash the flesh with a bit of lemon or lime juice to prevent browning or freeze the halves or slices as they are. Place the prepared avocado in an airtight container or freezer bag, removing as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn.

For guacamole, prepare your favorite recipe, then transfer it to an airtight container. Smooth the surface and add a thin layer of lemon or lime juice, or press plastic wrap directly onto the surface to prevent air exposure. Seal the container tightly before placing it in the freezer. When you're ready to use, thaw the frozen avocado or guacamole in the refrigerator. This method allows you to enjoy the fresh taste of avocados and guacamole even when they're out of season.

Dangers of Storing Avocados In Water

Storing avocados or guacamole in water to extend their freshness has become a popular hack, but it comes with certain risks and potential dangers. While this method can temporarily prevent browning by reducing exposure to air, it can also create an environment conducive to bacterial growth. Water can harbor harmful bacteria such as Listeria and Salmonella, which can contaminate the avocados and lead to foodborne illnesses. Additionally, storing avocados in water can negatively impact their texture and flavor, making them watery and less enjoyable to eat. To ensure food safety and maintain the quality of your avocados, it’s better to use other preservation methods like refrigeration, freezing, or using citrus juice to prevent browning.

Using Citrus On Avocados and Guacamole

Using citrus juice on avocados and guacamole is a simple and effective method to prevent browning and extend their freshness. The ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in lemon, lime, or even orange juice helps to slow down the oxidation process, which causes the fruit to turn brown when exposed to air.

For avocados, after cutting and removing the pit, brush or sprinkle a small amount of citrus juice over the exposed flesh. If you have leftover avocado halves, you can wrap them tightly in plastic wrap or store them in an airtight container after applying the citrus juice to further protect them from air exposure.

For guacamole, mix in a tablespoon or two of fresh lemon or lime juice into the mixture. This not only adds a pleasant tangy flavor but also helps to keep the guacamole green and appealing. To maximize freshness, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole or store it in an airtight container before refrigerating.

Using citrus juice is a natural and flavorful way to keep your avocados and guacamole looking and tasting their best.
